Past, Present, And Future

The Past, Present, and Future in the Trinity

This idea stems from a blend of leadership theories and spiritual truths—how our thoughts, behaviors, and habits shape the way we live. The 10/80/10 framework offers a rhythm of living that promotes emotional health, healing, and hope. If we lived by this rhythm, it could transform how we think, feel, and move forward each day.

Here’s the breakdown:
10% of our thoughts and energy should be given to acknowledging and healing the past.
80% should be spent in mindfulness and purposeful living in the present.
The final 10% should look forward in hopeful expectation for the future, dreaming with intention and asking God how to get there.

10% – The Past: Honoring Where We've Been

If we dwell too long in the past, we risk becoming trapped in pain, shame, or regret. But when we approach our past with the intent to heal and learn, it becomes sacred ground. This space allows us to validate our story, recognize the truth of what we've been through, and bring those pieces into the light of God's love.

This small but powerful 10% gives us permission to accept who we were—with our flaws, glory, and growing purpose. It’s the soil from which wisdom grows. And wisdom, when rooted in Christ, doesn’t just stay in the past—it shapes our today.

80% – The Present: Living in Today’s Presence

This is where the fullness of life happens. Spending 80% of our attention in the present invites us to be fully aware of the people around us, the choices we make, and the movement of the Holy Spirit. When we slow down and pay attention to the present moment, we discover the richness of God’s presence.

This presence leads to peace. It teaches us gratitude and helps us release what we don’t need to carry into tomorrow. Whether it’s what we eat, how we move our bodies, the way we connect with others—or how we sit alone with God—this awareness invites healthier decisions.

When we tune in and allow space for vulnerability, the Holy Spirit meets us there. Honest emotion in real time is powerful. It can transform pain into peace and confusion into clarity. Living mindfully—guided by Christ—helps us respond rather than react. And that’s when life begins to shift.

10% – The Future: Hope That Leads Us Forward

The final 10% turns our gaze forward. It opens doors of imagination, faith, and holy dreaming. This isn’t about control—it’s about hope. It’s about partnering with God to imagine what can be: in a year, five years, or even ten.

This space draws our hearts into expectancy. From here, we begin to shape our present with the future in mind—trusting that what God is building in us today will lead to what He has for us tomorrow. Each small act of faith today becomes a stepping stone toward the life He’s inviting us into.

The Trinity Within the 10/80/10

Now, let’s bring in the fullness of God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—into this rhythm:

God the Father: The Keeper of the Past

God in the Old Testament is the Teacher, the One who guides, disciplines, and restores. From the Garden of Eden forward, He has called His people to remember—remember His faithfulness, His mercy, and His covenant.

He invites us to learn from the past, not to be chained to it. He gave us free will, and though humanity stumbled, He never turned His face away. His justice is matched by His grace, and in every story, we see His desire to redeem and restore.

God knows our histories. We are not hidden from Him. Every chapter of our past is seen, known, and—when we allow it—healed in His love.

“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert” -Isaiah 43:18-19

Jesus: The Anchor in the Present

Jesus is the map for how to live in today. He often spoke of the past—not to dwell on it, but to learn from it. He also continually called people into the now: to love their neighbor, to forgive, to take heart, to not worry about tomorrow.

He taught in the tension of "already and not yet"—anchoring us in the moment while filling it with eternal meaning. He knew the human tendency to look too far ahead or stay too long in the past, and He spoke directly into that tension with love and clarity.

What makes Jesus so powerful in our present lives is that He knows the heart. He speaks into our exact moment through the Holy Spirit, giving us what we need for today.

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, yes and forever.” Hebrews 13:8

The Holy Spirit: The Voice of Future Hope

The Holy Spirit is our guide into what’s next. He stirs dreams, plants longings, and reveals the path forward in whispers and wisdom. He doesn’t give us the whole picture—but He does give us steps. Peace. Assurance. Nudges to act in faith.

He breathes imagination into our hearts, reminding us we’re created for more. He speaks to the identity God placed in us before time began, and walks with us as it unfolds.

Having a relational, living connection with the Trinity is the only way to move confidently into the future. Hope without Jesus is just wishing. But hope anchored in the Spirit is a holy pursuit—a faith-filled walk toward becoming.

“For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.” - Romans 8:24-25

Living the 10/80/10 with God

So now, with the Father’s wisdom from the past, the Son’s presence in our now, and the Spirit’s guidance into the future, we are equipped to live with purpose, peace, and hope.

Let your past be a teacher, your present a sanctuary, and your future a canvas for God’s promises.
